About
Golden Comedy Review is about comedy made with words. We pay attention to the small decisions that shape a comic essay, column, book or brief piece: a shift in meaning, a voice that holds its nerve, a detour that changes the destination. The aim is attentive reading, not a formula for making every joke work.
What we cover
Our subjects include wordplay, comic structure, narrative voice and the forms written comedy takes. We also look at how conventions change over time. Coverage is literary and cultural rather than a scorecard of what readers ought to find funny.
Who this is for
The publication is for curious readers, writers and anyone who enjoys noticing how a comic passage is put together. You do not need specialist vocabulary: close attention to a sentence, its pacing and its turn is enough to begin.
How we read
We make a case with specific features of the writing and distinguish interpretation from verifiable fact. Comedy depends on context and taste, so we describe what a choice appears to do without insisting that every reader must respond in the same way.
A joke is made of choices.
We look at what words, structure and voice do on the page, so a laugh can be enjoyed and understood at once.
